About Us

Bracknell Film Society is a not-for-profit, membership-based organisation run by a group of volunteers made up of members voted in at each AGM.

The Society started showing films in local community venues in 1960, and since 1981 has shown films at South Hill Park Arts Centre.

We hold a film evening all year round on the second Tuesday of each month, which is open to members and the general public, and is usually followed by an informal discussion over drinks in the bar. Informative programme notes about each film are compiled by the Society and distributed to members prior to the film showing.

Pre-pandemic, the Society regularly organised additional talks and film events, including a ‘Quarterly Classic’ and showing a short film at each of our monthly evenings. As audiences return to cinemas we hope to increase our film-related events.

During the pandemic-enforced closure of cinemas, the Society endeavoured to continue to provide a good service, and worked with independent film distributors to bring to our members a range of new feature and documentary films accessible via online streaming.

Alongside our cinema film showings, we continue to provide an online offering to members of new British and world cinema films via online streaming service YourScreen, including many titles not otherwise available in the UK. Society members benefit from a ticket discount and the Society receives a share of each ticket sold.

The Society has won many awards from Cinema for All (formerly the British Federation of Film Societies) including for Best Programme, Best Programme Notes, Best Website and Film Society of the Year. We initiated and continue to support and operate the Dementia Friendly and Relaxed Screenings at South Hill Park.

The Society was a finalist in the Alzheimer's Society's National Dementia Friendly Awards for Organisation of the Year (Small and Medium), 2017 recognising our work in improving the lives of people with dementia.
